An alliance of more than 180 organisations committed to children's rights has criticised the Government for not referring to smacking in its child protection Green Paper, Every child matters. The Children's Rights Alliance for England, in its annual review of UK Government action on the UN convention on the rights of the child, published last week, said, 'The Green Paper, aimed at reforming child protection, does not mention smacking.

Joint success in inspections

The results of the first joint care and education inspections of early years settings in Scotland have just been published following a pilot programme carried out in November and December 2002. The new integrated inspections aim to simplify and rationalise the inspection process by co-ordinating visits from the Care Commission's inspectors and HM Inspectorate of Education (News, 12 September 2002).

The General Teaching Council (GTC) in Scotland has launched a last-ditch protest against the Scottish Executive's decision to phase out a legal requirement for local authorities to have a qualified teacher in nursery schools and classes. In some cases local authorities had extended the requirement to partner providers in the private and voluntary sectors as a condition which had to be fulfilled if the provision was to be eligible for public nursery education funding. However, this was not consistent across Scotland.

Inspiring creativity in the classroom is the aim of a new website that gives examples of success stories from projects in nurseries and school across Scotland. The site has been developed from Creativity in Education, published by Learning and Teaching in Scotland and the IDES Network in 2001. Case studies can be used as a starting point to identify characteristics conducive to learning for creativity. The site also includes a discussion forum for teachers and practitioners to share their ideas , links to other websites and tips on how to nurture and teach creativity. Time for training

I was perturbed to read in the feature 'Put in the shade' (10 April) that it 'takes four years to train a teacher, while childcare staff can train on the job'. This is incorrect. Although there are some four-year teaching qualifications, a graduate of almost any field can obtain a PGCE in one year. While it is true that childcare staff may obtain an NVQ while working in a setting, other childcare courses are full-time college courses with workplace experience, in the same way that PGCE students undertake teaching practice.
