Michael Jones, who has a background in speech and language therapy and teaching, sets out how children learn to talk, and the role adults play in developing language. This book clearly delineates the different aspects of language development through specimen conversations (including on subjects such as ‘Is Elvis real?’ with a four-and-a-half- year old). It is also packed with a broad range of theory, as well as practical tasks and case studies, including from the author’s time leading the Every Child a Talker scheme.
