I Want My Hat Back

Friday, October 14, 2011

By Jon Klassen, Walker Books, hardback, 11.99

Bear’s hat is gone, and he wants it back, so he sets out patiently and politely to ask a series of animals whether they have seen it. Rabbit says he hasn’t seen the hat despite the fact that he’s wearing it, and bear moves on. Then deer sparks bear’s memory of seeing his hat and his search is renewed with a vengeance.

This is deadpan humour at its best, with a wickedly dark twist that draws bear himself in to telling a lie. Told completely through dialogue and largely flat brown illustration, the real deception here lies in the apparent simplicity of the story. This is a fabulously original and wry tale by a rising talent, giving an intriguing insight in to fibbing!
