The content of Functional Skills qualifications

This consultation seeks views on proposed subject content for reformed Functional Skills qualifications in English and mathematics.

The consultation document asks whether the proposed subject content for Functional Skills in English and mathematics represents a demanding course of study, and whether it will help students develop the numeracy and literacy skills required for employment.

Revised English content includes:

  • increased focus on oral communication
  • stronger requirements for spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • phonics

Revised mathematics content includes:

  • contextualised skills, such as calculating simple compound interest or percentages based on VAT
  • mathematical literacy
  • approximation, estimation and checking
