Name: Jennifer Parker Position: Deputy pre-school manager at Jeavons Wood Primary School in Cambourne

Congratulations on becoming the first recipient of the new PBD City & Guilds Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for the Children and Young People's Workforce (Early Years). Why did you take the course?

I'd just been appointed deputy pre-school manager as well as manager of the breakfast club at the main school. I wanted to do a new qualification to help me get more knowledge and rise to those challenges. I built my confidence by leading training sessions, and I took my optional unit in finance.

You completed the course in seven months rather than the suggested 12-18 months. How did you manage to do it so quickly?

I was so determined and, especially as I was starting a new role, I was really keen to get my teeth into it. Usually once I get started on something it's hard to tear me away.

What are your plans now?

I'd like to go on to do a foundation degree, but I've not got the time around work. You have to get a day off and that's almost impossible when you're full-time. But I would consider doing my Level 6 if I could do it in the same way as this course - on weekends and in evenings.
