Name: Jan Hooper, Position: senior manager of The House of Eden Nursery in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham

What led you to make the brave decision to have your hair cut off for charity?

I was inspired by a story on the radio of a girl who donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides wigs and hairpieces for children who suffer hair loss due to cancer treatment, to help her friend. I'd been thinking about having my hair cut at the time, although the charity requires at least seven inches so I had to grow it.

Was it daunting to have your hair cut off in front of parents and children during the nursery's summer fair?

Yes, particularly as my deputy manager cut the length off before a parent, who works as a hairdresser, styled what was left of my hair. I had nine inches cut off and managed to raise £460 during the event.

How will your donation be used?
The charity will make a wig out of my hair and the money raised will pay for a synthetic wig.
