Position: Owner of The Day Nursery, Rawreth

Why did you decide to open a nursery?

I was looking to get a headship but my daughter wanted to go back to work after having her baby, Molly, and we started looking at nurseries. They all had something to offer, but there was always something they did I couldn't understand. I was sure I could do it better.

How did you get the nursery ready?

The sale was a long and arduous process, but once we got the building in April 2008 our feet didn't touch the floor. My 89-year-old mum, my husband, my daughter and I spent every spare minute getting it up to standard. We opened in September for just the one child, Molly, and by Christmas we had 15 children.

How has the nursery grown since opening?

This year it's gone crazy - we have 127 children now and we won a UK Business Finance Award. I think people like that we're a real family business. I did worry that because I loved being a teacher so much I might be bored with very young children, but I could not have been more wrong. They literally progress by the hour - it staggers me.
