University to host free early years pedagogy and curriculum conference

Wednesday, June 5, 2019

Early years professionals can sign up for a conference at the University of Wolverhampton on 29 June.

The university’s Walsall campus will host the ‘Pedagogy, curriculum and the art of teaching in early childhood’ conference for practitioners, professionals and students who are interested in or work in the early years sector.

Keynote speakers include Sir Al Aynsley-Green, the first-ever children's commissioner for England, who has over 40 years of experience working with governments and organisations worldwide on children, childhood and children’s services, and June O’Sullivan, chief executive of the London Early Years Foundation (LEYF), both of whom will lead a debate on the challenges facing children today.

Sir Al said, ‘We must celebrate what is good for children today, but for too many children, the outcomes for health, social care, education and poverty are some of the worst. What some children have told me about their lives is shocking. It’s time we had urgent action to address it.’

He added, ‘June will provide her views on how pedagogical leadership, the art of teaching, can redress some of these inequities children face. June will debate the importance of pedagogical leaders who understand how children learn and develop taking account of every element of the service from home to school including significant relationships at home, at school and within the wider community. As a social enterprise LEYF is uniquely situated to make a real difference.’

Topics of workshops at the conference will include phonics, schemas, embedding early maths, and the Early Years Pupil Premium.
