More than 1,500 children entered the Design a Bug competition, held by childcare insurers Morton Michel in association with Buglife, the invertebrate conservation trust.

Judges including Nursery World editor Liz Roberts were tasked with choosing the winners.

Childcare settings who entered the competition, which was open to anyone involved in the early years and childcare sector, reported how taking part promoted discussion amongst children about the importance of bugs and how everyone can help protect them from extinction.

Entrants were judged in three age categories – under-five, five to seven, or eight to 11, with the artwork submitted by their childcarer or school.

The under-five winner was Theo Weir, aged four, from Happy Hedgehogs out-of-school club in Buckinghamshire. Theo’s ‘winter bug’ (pictured right) won him a remote control bug and Back to Nature Story Cushions from Fine Solutions for his setting.

Isaac Jones from Dylan’s Den out-of-school club in Wales was the five to seven category winner for his moustache wearing bug (pictured bottom). Isaac won a Blue Butterfly mini beast rug for himself and his setting.

The eight to 11 winner was ten-year-old Macy Read from Northampton. Macy’s childminder Louise Read submitted her drawing of a polka dot bee (pictured right), which won her a TTS Butterfly Habitat.

All children who entered the competition will be sent a set of coloured pencils and a sharpener by Morton Michel.
