Training Update

ENGAGING MEN

Fathers Plus offers a range of training programmes designed to help those working in children's services engage more effectively with men. Its half-day workshops include 'Recruiting men into services - How to do it', a practical session that outlines strategies for attracting men into childcare job roles. This complements its newly developed and extended course, 'Including Men in Organisations', which provides training days, workshops and consultations to boost male recruitment across the whole spectrum of children's services.

Other half-day workshops include 'Learning through Play with Dad', focusing on how 'fathers become meaningful and special to their children through play', and 'Dealing with Disagreements: A man's view', which aims to address particular issues men may face and how better outcomes can be achieved for their children and themselves.

I CAN BUILDS CONFIDENCE

Enhancing Communication in the Early Years is a course aimed at practitioners with a basic knowledge of speech and language development, who wish to develop their ability to identify and support those with additional communication needs Practitioners receive ten hours of tuition and undertake a further ten hours of self-directed study. The first study day defines what language is, explores its development and looks at speech, language and communication (SLCN) needs. The second day explores how SLCN can affect access to the curriculum and strategies for meeting the needs of children.

The self-directed study aspect includes creating reflective practice workbooks and reviewing their objectives.

Organisations and settings can buy this course on a flexible basis.

CHILD CENTRED APPROACH

How to maximise the effectiveness of the team around the child is examined in a seminar, 'TAC: the Small Collaborative Team in Early Childhood Intervention', in Bristol on 24 March. Topics for discussion will cover how a 'whole-child' approach can reduce pressure on child, family and practitioners, and how TAC, CAF, keyworking, the lead professional and the multi-agency integrated pathway all fit together.
