A competent First Aider can cope in an emergency situation, so make sure your skills and knowledge are up to date The Child Accident Prevention Trust believes child accidental injury prevention needs to be addressed to the physical environment, behaviour and attitudes, and that it is not always solved by simply buying the right equipment. The Trust aims to raise awareness of children's accidents, give pointers to children's accident potential, and suggest ways of carrying out good practice. Its seminars include:

The Child Accident Prevention Trust believes child accidental injury prevention needs to be addressed to the physical environment, behaviour and attitudes, and that it is not always solved by simply buying the right equipment. The Trust aims to raise awareness of children's accidents, give pointers to children's accident potential, and suggest ways of carrying out good practice. Its seminars include:

* Setting policy and strategies at management level.

* Setting good practice in early years settings.

* Risk assessment for after-school clubs, playschemes, playgroups and nurseries.

The seminars are particularly relevant for Sure Start teams and networks wishing to promote good practice.

Crechendo Training runs courses in South Kensington and Wandsworth in London, on:

* First Aid for babies and children. Knowing how to react in an emergency could save a child's life. This certified, one-day First Aid course provides the skills to deal with everyday emergencies, as well as covering life-saving techniques including resuscitation, choking, burns and bleeding.

The City of Bristol College runs a course on:

* Paediatric First Aid. This course is for everyone working with children and young people. It focuses on First Aid skills and the knowledge needed to help and comfort children involved in accidents.

CJ Associates runs courses on:

* First Aid in early years. This two-day course covers casualty assessment, choking, bleeding, wounds, bandaging and resuscitation, epilepsy, care of the sick child, emergency plans, diabetes, burns and poisoning.

* Allergy management. A half-day course for anyone involved with handling and preparing food.

Maternity and Nanny Training (MNT) runs a course every eight weeks on:

* Paediatric First Aid, at the University of Reading. This comprehensive half-day, emergency First Aid course is held on Saturdays, and is suitable for people working with babies and children up to the age of seven. It leads to a paediatric First Aid certificate.

The Montessori Centre International runs a seminar on:

* Exploring issues around health and safety in the nursery. This seminar encompasses a variety of issues relating to children's health and care, including appropriate nutrition and immunisation packages.

The National Centre on Shaken Baby Syndrome is holding:

* The European conference on Shaken Baby Syndrome in Edinburgh on 18 to 20 May. This three-day conference will cover a range of topics and research that will benefit a multidisciplinary audience. It is designed to foster dialogue and networking among professionals and families.

The Northern Ireland Childminding Association will be running courses on:

* First Aid training, in January and February, with St John Ambulance.

The Pre-School Learning Alliance and the National Childminding Association (NCMA) have developed a course on:

* First Aid for those working with children under five. This is a 12-hour course in conjunction with the British Red Cross and St John Ambulance.The Alliance also runs a:

* Health and safety risk assessment course.

The Riverside Early Years Training Centre runs training courses on:

* First Aid, for those working with babies and children. The two-day course covers causes of unconsciousness, treatment and resuscitation methods, the recovery position, bleeds and burns, head injuries, fractures and poisons.

* First Aid at work. This course will enable participants to renew or achieve a First Aid certificate.

St John Ambulance's varied First Aid courses include:

* Lifesaver for babies and children, which covers all aspects of emergency First Aid and resuscitation techniques.

* Emergency aid in schools, covering basic First Aid for teachers and ancillary staff.

* Emergency aid for nursery nurses and childminders.

Tinies Childcare runs a course on:

* Paediatric First Aid. This six-hour certified course is for anyone caring for children, including childminders, nursery nurses, and nursery and health club staff. It focuses on baby and child resuscitation and will ensure participants are competent to handle any emergency.

The Wales Pre-School Playgroups Association endorses First Aid training offered by the British Red Cross, St John Ambulance, First Aid Services Training, Cambrian Ambulance Services and Medic First Aid.
