EYP Diary - Inspiring the next generation of EYPs

Nikki Fairchild provides the update on how Chichester University's EYP programme is progressing this year and how it is preparing for change under the Government's proposals for Early Years Teachers

The University was thrilled to welcome back the Early Years Professionals who had met the requirements since January 2012. The evening included candidates from the GPP (January and September 2012), UPP (January 2012) and GEP (January 2012) and it was a chance to network and catch up. There was a thought provoking presentation by Dr Tim Gully on aspects of social pedagogy practices in Denmark. Attendees were challenged to consider risk in their settings and how they support the social and emotional development of children – the final message being it’s OK to have nettles in the garden! We were also honoured to have our Vice Chancellor Professor Clive Behagg to present certificates and speak of the vital work Early Years Professionals accomplish in their settings and schools.

Tracking progress

We currently have four pathways in progress at different stages:-

? Graduate Entry Pathway and Undergraduate Entry Pathway
GEP development reviews have taken place and feedback issued. They are arranging visits to other settings to investigate how practice differs. I have arranged a catch up session to discuss their career options after the finish EYPS. They are moving into the final stages of the pathway and are preparing for setting visits and presentations on their professional practice to their colleagues.
The UEPs are now in placement and have been reflecting on aspects of pedagogy. They have had a session on social pedagogy and been asked to consider what shapes their view of working with children. Development reviews are in progress and written assignments are being completed and handed in for assessment.

? Undergraduate Practitioner Pathways
The Development Reviews have taken place and feedback has been issued to all the UPPs. We have had a session on the written aspect of the assessment process and how to integrate these with their module assignments. Candidates have been attending baby placements to ensure their holistic knowledge of children from birth to five. Many have been writing assignments on these placements.

? Graduate Practitioner Pathways
The GPPs were fortunate to have a guest lecturer this week. We welcome Sheilagh Blyth, a local occupation therapist. This session was an opportunity to fully understand the role of other professionals and a chance to explore challenges and possibilities when working with others. The development reviews are scheduled for after Easter and the second written assignment have been assessed and feedback returned to them.

Moving on to September 2013

There is a consultation into the new Early Years Teacher Status standards and I would encourage all who wish to give their feedback to the Teaching Agency to do so, the closing date being the 30 April 2013. I have been working with our equivalency test provider Equivalency Testing for Career Development and they have released a foundation level biology paper for use with the September 2013 intake. This is being forwarded to all applicants who need to gain the GCSE in science to give them time to refresh their knowledge prior to taking the exam.
