UNDERSTANDING BULLYING
The NSPCC, in partnership with distant learning specialist EduCare, has launched a short course to help practitioners tackle bullying. 'Preventing Bullying Behaviour' follows the EduCare distance learning approach of bite-sized, easy-to-absorb learning with simple messages. It allows users to work at home and combines building core knowledge with signposts for further study. The programme is available in both paper-based and online learning formats.

HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICERS
Training provider Alliance Learning has developed a health and safety consultancy service designed to help businesses in the north-west train up an existing staff member to become a health and safety officer.
Its launch comes in response to the training needs of small businesses that cannot afford to employ someone in a dedicated role. Qualified advisors are available on a consultancy basis to visit sites and advise on procedures such as audits, inspections, risk assessments and health and safety policies. A free assessment can be given to establish the business requirements.

HOW TO CHILDMIND
East Lothian Council is running courses on how to become a registered childminder, with an introduction to childminding as a career. The two-hour sessions are running from 6pm to 8pm every Thursday.
Caroline Griffiths, the council's childminding development officer, says, 'I know there are lots of people out there who would like to work as childminders but don't know how to get started. The purpose of these sessions is to look at what is involved - how to manage your tax returns, what health and safety measures need to be in place in your home, child protection issues and training opportunities.'
