Manager, Fiveways Playcentre, Brighton

What would you consider your biggest achievement in 40 years at Fiveways?

Moving with the times, adapting to changes and being aware of the needs of both children and parents. I have watched Fiveways grow from a little playgroup in a church hall - now more than 240 children are registered attending pre-school, after school or both. But I haven't done this alone: we have a great staff team with a very small staff turnover.

What are your plans for the future?

I have no concrete plans at the moment, but it will be great to enjoy my many crafts and our beautiful garden, to travel out of school time, to be able to spend more time with my husband and eight grandchildren.

What advice would you give to people starting a career in childcare?

My advice to people starting in childcare is to be aware that you need to be dedicated; it is hard work, but it is so rewarding to see children thriving and growing in confidence when your input has helped to make that possible. I also feel that at last childcare staff are being recognised: it has been a long time coming.
