Spotlight on…Emma Plucknett
Manager, Mama Bear’s Day Nursery and Pre-School, Soundwell
HOW DID YOU JOIN MAMA BEAR’S?
After qualifying, I took a temporary role at my current nursery, which was taken over by Mama Bear’s in 2009. Mama Bear’s then employed me as a full-time Level 3 nursery nurse, and four months later I was promoted to team leader of the under-twos unit, a role I loved very much. I became deputy manager and pre-school team leader in 2013, and knew I wanted to continue to push myself and become manager of the setting I had worked so hard in for so long. When the opportunity came up in 2015, I knew it was my time.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BEST MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?
I have lots, so pinpointing one is really difficult! As a personal achievement, after my first Ofsted inspection as manager, I was approached by Capita to write and present a speech about parental engagement at an early years conference. Luckily for me I had a very supportive area manager who encouraged me to do it and came to London with me for support.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?
As deputy manager it was a huge learning curve to balance being the voice of the staff team with supporting the manager, especially when I didn’t always agree with both sides. The role really developed my confidence in speaking out about what I believed in and I now pride myself on ensuring children are at the centre of every decision made.
HOW DID YOU CELEBRATE YOUR TENTH ANNIVERSARY WITH THE GROUP?
My ten-year anniversary with Mama Bear’s also meant ten years that the setting has been part of the group, so we celebrated with a garden party for everyone.
HOW DID IT FEEL TO GET A GOOD RATING FROM OFSTED IN YOUR TENTH YEAR?
I’m incredibly proud of my team, most of whom were experiencing their first inspection. Achieving a Good rating has given us direction for how we can improve our provision, as well as celebrate our success.
