Former Cabinet minister David Blunkett was due to unveil plans to generate greater social mobility and debate about welfare reform on Tuesday, as Nursery World went to press.

The move follows Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg's announcement lastweek that he was setting up an independent Commission on SocialMobility, to be chaired by Barnado's chief executive, Martin Narey, whois also the chair of the End Child Poverty Coalition.

Mr Clegg said, 'It is utterly unacceptable that by the age of seven, abright but poor child will be overtaken at school by a child who wasstruggling in pre-school years but is from a more affluent background.'
