Nursery group crowdfunds for life-saving devices

Monday, October 30, 2017

Bright Kids nursery group is crowdfunding to raise money to buy a defibrillator for each of its three settings and one for public use.

The group, which has nurseries in Redditch (Worcestershire), Studley (Warwickshire) and Northfield (Birmingham), needs to raise £3,250 to buy and install three defibrillators in its settings, plus another for public use, available at any time, in the centre of Studley.

To raise the money, Bright Kids has launched a campaign on Crowdfunding, with rewards, including a personalised thank you certificate and a ‘shout-out’ on Facebook, for those who pledge £10 and over. So far, they have raised £725 and have until 30 November to reach their target.

The nursery group said they decided to use crowdfunding as buying four defibrillators is a ‘large outlay’ in one go and at a time when the sector is facing a ‘funding crisis’.

Tricia Wellings, owner of Bright Kids, told Nursery World, ‘We became aware that there were no defibrillators available 24/7 in our local community in Studley, Warwickshire, and with a population of 6,000 people we thought it would be good to try to raise funds to provide one. While doing this, we then thought it would be beneficial to also put them in all the nurseries.

‘We wanted to do this for the community, especially the 24-hour defibrillator, and while we are putting in a large sum ourselves, we thought we would see if others would support it as they may be one of the ones who benefits from it long-term.

‘Having this equipment will mean we are fully prepared for every eventuality. We see ourselves as an essential part of the communities in which we are based so this is just another service we can offer that may one day save a life.

‘My training company MBK Training offers paediatric first aid training to early years practitioners, and we do parent courses too, so it’s a natural step to consider more proactive means to support our families and communities. We have also undertaken Millie’s Mark in all of our settings, which raised our awareness of all kinds of first aid including the use of defibrillators.’
