A parent's guide to early social development

Parents often say they want their children to be happy, but in reality may be more concerned about whether they are learning to read and write rather than growing in confidence and social skills. But children cannot learn well if they are unhappy. The Foundation Stage, which was introduced by the Government in September 2000, is used with children who are three years old and continues until the end of their first year in school. The curriculum is based on learning through play. There are six areas of learning in the Foundation Stage. Knowing about these will help you understand what your child is doing so you can support him or her at this important time.
