Grandparents can face special challenges when supporting their grandchildren, but advice is now at hand

Grandparents can be playmate, childcarer, adviser to their own children and, increasingly, primary carer to their grandchildren.

To help them support the healthy development of their grandchildren, Zero To Three has developed a range of resources. Parents and practitioners might also find them useful. Funded by MetLife Foundation, the leaflets include:

  • 'Watching and wondering: how to identify challenges in your grandchild's development'
  • 'Sharing the caring: partnering with your adult child to care for your grandchild'
  • 'Talking it out: a tool for establishing good communications between parents and grandparents'
  • 'Play with me: fun activities that support early learning'
  • 'That was then: sharing family traditions with your grandchildren'
  • 'When the answer is no: setting limits with love for toddlers'
  • 'Here for you always: supporting your grandchild through a divorce or separation'
  • 'A big impact on little kids: understanding how traumatic experiences affect young children'
  • 'Understanding fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: how alcohol use during pregnancy impacts young children'.
