Director of Collar & Cuffs Co

Can you tell us about the work you do?

I run Collar & Cuffs Co, a theatre company specialising in multi-sensory theatre for young children. We’re currently offering an award-winning adaptation of Little Meerkat’s Big Panic, based on the storybook by trauma and parenting expert Jane Evans.

This show, designed to be delivered in early years and primary settings, helps children to understand what’s going on in their brains and bodies when they feel anxious or scared, and to discover how very simple play strategies can be used to help them feel calmer. The project is in partnership with my sister, Ellie, who runs Early Years SEN in Northamptonshire.

What motivated you?

I became a mum to twin boys in 2012, and developed post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of a near-fatal pulmonary embolism. That’s when I discovered Jane’s book. The only way to capture and hold the attention and emotional engagement of very young children is through multi-sensory approaches. Combined, Ellie and I have over 30 years’ experience of working with children, young people and adults with complex needs.

What kind of projects have you got planned in the near future?

We have two more children’s shows in the pipeline. One is an adaptation of Jeanne Willis’s storybook Chicken Clicking. This critically acclaimed funny rhyming story helps very young children to understand early messages about online safety.

We’re also working on an original show responding to needs identified by early years settings. Crabby is a set in a rock pool at the seaside and will explore anger and frustration from toddler tantrums to arguments and fights, as well as friendship skills. All our shows are backed up with training for staff, parents and carers too.
