Nursery school and children's centre chosen as a teaching school

Tuesday, March 3, 2015

Sheringham Nursery School and Children’s Centre in Newham, led by Julian Grenier, has been selected to become a National Teaching School.

It is one of 61 schools in England to be granted teaching school status in the latest round.

Sheringham Nursery School and Children’s Centre’s headteacher Julian Grenier has been chosen as the school’s designed National Leader of Education (NLE), and the deputy headteacher, Lesley Webb, a Specialist Leader of Education (SLE).

Introduced in 2011, teaching schools work with partner schools and early years settings to provide high-quality training and development to new and experienced teaching staff.

Their purpose is to raise standards through supporting other schools, engaging in research and development, and identifying and developing school leaders and future headteachers.

The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) has overall responsibility for teaching schools, which must all be graded outstanding and meet set eligibility criteria to apply for funding.

Including those in the latest round, there are now more than 650 teaching schools across the country.

Headteacher Julian Grenier said, ‘We are absolutely delighted with this achievement, which is the result of a great deal of hard work by the staff team and governors.

‘Becoming a National Teaching School means we can do more to help Newham’s youngest children get the best start to life.

‘We are already recruiting for new primary teachers to start training this September through our partnership with Kaizen Primary School and the University of East London.’

Charlie Taylor, chief executive of the NCTL, said, ‘Sheringham Nursery School and Children’s Centre should be very proud of this achievement. The school has been recognised as a centre of excellence in its area, with an outstanding performance and a track record of raising standards through supporting other schools.’
