Find out more about becoming an early years teacher, in association with the Department for Education

A career in early years teaching is very rewarding. Early years teachers are specialists in early childhood development, trained to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for children from birth to age 5. This is a critical stage in children’s development. The evidence shows that teacher led provision leads to better outcomes for young children, and as a dedicated early years teacher you will have the opportunity to make a lasting and positive difference to children’s wellbeing, learning and development.

“My decision to pursue early years teacher status has been by far the best career step I have ever taken.”

- William Vanderpuye, early years teacher

What does an Early Years Initial Teacher Training course involve?

To become an early years teacher, you need to successfully complete an Early Years Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course to demonstrate that you meet the Teachers’ Standards (early years). Your training will provide opportunities to gain a wide range of experience in a range of settings.

There is still time to apply for an Early Years ITT place starting in September 2016 and you could receive a tax-free bursary of up to £5,000 while you train as an early years teacher. Your training fees of up to £7,000 will be paid.
