A month in the life of Harry Tobias

Physically Harry has achieved a new milestone this month. He can now climb up and down the stairs, but needs careful supervision. He continues to climb on furniture and is very adept at going over the arms of the sofas. Teething has caused Harry to be unsettled during the day and night.

Physically Harry has achieved a new milestone this month. He can now climb up and down the stairs, but needs careful supervision. He continues to climb on furniture and is very adept at going over the arms of the sofas.

Teething has caused Harry to be unsettled during the day and night.

Usually, however, he settles to sleep well.

Harry has a very deep voice, and he loves to use it! He waves with great enthusiasm, saying 'Ta ta', and continues to add to his repertoire of noises linked to books and stories. One particularly favoured book involves facial expressions. Harry blows out his cheeks, sticks out his tongue to say 'blah', and grins and says 'cheese' as the pages are turned. He was observed spending a concentrated period of time hunting through a pile of books, repeatedly saying 'cheese', clearly looking for this favourite book.

His face lit up when he found it.

Harry copies and learns from his older sister all the time. He enjoys putting away toys with her and was thrilled by a game of throwing balls into a large cardboard box.

Harry shows his love for his family and toys by putting his head in peoples laps or against their tummies, saying 'ahhh'.

Questions

1 At 15 months Harry weighs 8.788kg (19lb 6oz). Where does this place him on his centile growth chart?

2 What do you consider to be important when settling children of Harry's age to sleep at night?

Answers to part 15 questions (16 June)

1 The incubation period for chickenpox can be up to 21 days. It is an unpleasant condition in which children need comfort and reassurance.

Paracetemol is often given, together with the use of calamine lotion, to relieve itching. Bicarbonate of soda can be added to bath water, again to bring relief. Secondary infections can occur through scratching.

2 As Harry explores boxes by putting items in and tipping them out again, he is learning about capacity, shape and size. His manipulative skills are developing as he handles the different shapes, and he gains emotional satisfaction by achieving his aims.

3 Socially, Harry is learning from big sister Jasmine. As he gets older he will initiate games more, starting to lead Jasmine in play.

By Sandy Green, an early years consultant and freelance trainer. She is also Harry's grandmother.
