Winner: Kids Planet Day Nurseries, Warrington

Judges were quick to praise Kids Planet for its fantastic work with parents and for how staff actively listen to the children in their care.

Five years ago, the pre-school was an 'empty shell that needed bringing to life' - since then, the motivated staff have worked tirelessly to turn it into a setting they are all proud of. It is now a stimulating working environment, which is inviting to children and full of their ideas and suggestions.

Despite many changes being successfully implemented, practitioners, along with the children and their families, continue to review their practice to develop and progress the children's learning and the skills of staff.

Children's views are listened to and put into place. For example, an area was designated for superhero play, where the children role played and made up their own imaginative stories. The construction area was adapted by considering what the children wanted to use to build and make. Parents donated play props and building materials, and new resources were purchased to give children fresh inspiration.

The children's families are regarded as partners in their children's learning, providing practitioners with a wealth of information and support. A suggestion and praise box is located outside the pre-school room for the staff to read and act on where necessary. Children also have individual 'postcards' for parents to record special information and messages that are used in circle time to support children when sharing their stories, interests and achievements. Home diaries are also used.

Pre-school room leader Emma Morris says, 'A fresh outlook was needed and we are to this day still wanting to come to work with the same view, passion and creativity. I like the view that we are seen as "change agents". We are constantly reviewing our practice to offer the best possible start in life for our children.'

Magdalen Gates Preschool, Norwich, Norfolk

The judges found that 'strong community involvement and engagement' was demonstrated by this pre-school, which operates in one of the most deprived areas of Norwich. It provides stability for families in their daily lives. Parents are invited to weekly stay-and-play sessions and the children regularly venture into their local community.

Young Friends Nursery, Hove, Sussex

This 44-place nursery is staffed by practitioners who are loving, friendly and have a good sense of humour, according to parents who also highlight its large garden and well resourced open-plan building. Designated learning zones mean children have independent access to an enormous range of resources. Thoughtful set-ups allow continuous immersion in play and learning.
