Two members of staff from York College Day Nursery have been arrested by Police investigating the death of a three-year-old at the setting's outdoor area.

North Yorkshire Police has confirmed that two practitioners who work at York College Day Nursery were interviewed as part of their ongoing inquiries into the circumstances surrounding Lydia Bishop’s death. The two members of staff have since been released on bail.

Three-year-old Lydia Bishop suffered serious injuries after becoming entangled on a rope on a slide in York College Nursery’s outdoor area on her first day on 17 September.

An inquest on Monday revealed that nursery staff and paramedics carried out CPR after Lydia Bishop was found ‘unresponsive’ on a slide in the nursery’s outdoor area, with a rope around her neck.

York coroner David Coverdale said a post-mortem examination had shown a provisional cause of death was ‘pressure on the neck.’

A spokesperson for York College said, ‘We can confirm that two members of our nursery staff have been interviewed by the police.

‘We will continue to assist the investigating authorities in every way we can.

‘Our sincere condolences remain with Lydia’s family and our thoughts are with them and the staff, parents and children of the nursery who have been affected by this tragic event. We continue to do all we can to support those involved.’

The nursery is not expected to re-open before 5 November 2012.
