York College Nursery, which is currently under investigation after the death of a three-year-old at the setting's outdoor area, is to remain closed until 1 October.

A message published on York College’s website for parents of children who attend the nursery says, ‘York College is absolutely devastated at the news of the very sad death of Lydia Bishop, following a tragic incident at the York College Nursery on Monday (17 September 2012).

‘The nursery will be closed until at least Monday 1 October and arrangements for alternative childcare have been put in place.’

North Yorkshire Police confirmed last week that three-year-old Lydia Bishop suffered serious injuries after becoming entangled on a rope on a slide in York College nursery’s outdoor area on her first day.

The three-year-old was taken to York District Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

A letter, compiled by York City Council on behalf of York College, has now been sent to parents advising them of alternative childcare options.
