EYFS Profile results show some gains
Five-year-old girls are continuing to outperform boys across all assessment areas of the early learning goals, the latest Early Years Foundation Stage Profile results show.
The figures (see table below), which are based on practitioners' observations at the end of reception year, reveal that the biggest gap in achievement is found in communication, language and literacy: writing, where 72 per cent of girls were working securely within the assessment areas, compared with only 53 per cent of boys.
The statistics, published last week, are the first set since the introduction of the EYFS in September 2008. Against last year's figures, they show that more children are working securely within the early learning goals in every area of learning, which means they are achieving six or more points out of nine in each scale.
Physical development is the early learning goal where children do best, with 90 per cent achieving six points or more.
Sir Jim Rose said, 'These results from this year's EYFS Profile show clear and sustained improvements in major aspects of children's language learning. They are testimony to the high quality of teaching that practitioners and teachers are now providing for children in the early years. This shows that it was necessary to give the EYFS a real chance to bed in.'
