Better nursery food demanded

Melanie Defries, 11 December 2008, 12:00am

More than 3,370 people have signed a petition calling for the Government to put nutritional standards in place for nurseries.

The campaign, called Better Nursery Food Now, was launched in October by food company Organix and the Soil Association after a report found that some nurseries were spending just 25p per child on a meal (News, 22 October).

Campaigners want the Government to adopt the Caroline Walker Trust's guidelines for children under five, and for a minimum of 50p to be spent for every nursery child's lunch.

Joanna Quinn, PR manager for Organix, said, 'The number of signatures is always increasing, which is very encouraging. In the New Year we are going to continue to lobby the Government and we are also going to publish resources such as recipes and tips on our website that nurseries and parents can use.

'We also hope to include some case studies of nurseries who are providing healthy food.'
