Nursery opens door to a new career

Melanie Defries, 20 November 2008, 12:00am

A management consultant who gave up his career to retrain as a nursery nurse has opened his first nursery in Chard, Somerset.

Thanks to word of mouth recommendations, Chester's House, which opened in August, already has 50 children registered, ranging from four months to five years old. Rob Green, the nursery owner, currently employs a team of four full-time staff who look after up to 20 children at nursery at any one time.

Mr Green, who has three children of his own, said, 'I've always had a good rapport with children, and childcare was something I'd always wanted to do. I reached a time of life when I realised there were more important things than making money, and management consulting wasn't much of a life. I'd be away from home on business for five days a week.

'I gave up my job and studied the National Certificate in Early Years Studies at Somerset College and went on a lot of work placements and gained experience. I then set up a childminding business with a friend of mine last year, and officially opened Chester's House childcare this year.'

Mr Green extended his home to make room for the nursery in a separate area of the house.

He adds, 'I've always worked hard, but childcare is hard work in a different way. It's very rewarding. We have a really good team of people and I enjoy the way we observe children and look at how they're developing. I find it fascinating.'
