Poverty target 'could be met' by plans

Diverting taxes to the poorest families could halve child poverty in a matter of months, according to a joint charity and accountancy report.

Children's charity Barnardo's and business advisory firm Deloitte set out three options, involving no extra cost to taxpayers, which between them could raise 1,800,000 children out of poverty. This would almost certainly meet the Government's target for halving child poverty by 2010. The first option is to re-direct the £2.7bn 10p tax rate compensation package towards eradicating child poverty.
