Unhealthy eating may be putting unborn children at risk

Nursery World, 10 July 2008

Pregnant women who eat unhealthily may be putting their child at risk of long-term health problems, according to new research.

Studies by the Royal Veterinary College carried out on rats found that mothers who ate a diet rich in fat, sugar and salt while pregnant were more likely to have offspring who over-ate, and had higher levels of cholesterol, fat, glucose and insulin, compared with rats who ate regular food. The effects lasted beyond adolescence. The researchers believe the effects also apply to humans.
