Opinion: In my view - Protect, don't punish

Nearly every day you will see a news story about alcohol and children, with headlines like 'Wasted youth: binge drinking violence on rise' and 'Alcohol puts 20 under-18s in hospital a day'.
The issue of alcohol is on one hand linked to socialising, having fun and perceived health benefits, and on the other, crime, deprivation and serious long-term health problems. This is a difficult dichotomy which is giving children mixed messages. A first step towards changing children's attitudes towards drinking is to reflect on the drinking behaviour in adult society all around them. Children of all ages can be affected by parents or carers misusing alcohol....
