Strategy for play awarded to Play England

Catherine Gaunt, 19 June 2008, 12:00am

Play England has been named by the Government as the support body for its Play Strategy.

The organisation will work with 20 Play Pathfinder and 43 Playbuilder local authorities that have been allocated funding to develop 30 adventure playgrounds and up to 3,500 play areas for children from eight to 13 years old.

Play England's director Adrian Voce said, 'This funding and the wider national play strategy should see play become central to children's services and local planning frameworks for years to come. This new contract confirms both the importance of a national support body for that process, and how far Play England has come.'

One of Play England's first tasks will be to produce guidance on design principles for outdoor play areas and to revise its Planning for Play guidance.

Minister for children Kevin Brennan said, 'Being able to burn off energy in unstructured play is an important part of growing up and maintaining a healthy weight and life.'
