premature baby girls from serious chest infections, but does little to prevent respiratory illnesses in boys, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins children's centre in Baltimore, Maryland.

A study of 119 premature infants published in the journal Pediatrics found that girls who received formula milk were eight times more likely to be hospitalised with respiratory illnesses, while one-fifth of the boys developed respiratory problems severe enough to need hospital treatment whether they were breastfed or not.
