Headteacher accused by General Teaching Council tribunal

20 March 2008, 12:00am

A headteacher has been accused of force-feeding and unfairly punishing children by a General Teaching Council tribunal. Patricia Ann Baynes, who has been head at Bordesley Green East Nursery School in Birmingham for 23 years, failed to turn up to the tribunal last week. Bridget Ravenhall, a nursery nurse at the school, gave evidence against her, saying she had seen Mrs Baynes force-feed children until they vomited and forcibly drag children out of classrooms. A senior nursery teacher, Angela Foxe-Lowe, claimed Mrs Baynes enforced a chair programme where children who were deemed to be naughty or who soiled themselves were banished to sit in the corridor alone, week after week.

A nursery worker across the border denied similar charges at a sheriff's court in West Linton, Scotland. Gillian Gold is accused of force-feeding children who were in her care at Country Kids Nursery in West Linton. The charges follow a Care Commission investigation that took place last year. A trial date was set for 4 June.
