Poverty: Government is one million off child poverty target, say MPs

The Government will miss its target of halving the number of children living in poverty by 2010 by around one million unless it takes urgent action, MPs have warned.

A report this week by the Commons Select Committee on Work and Pensions says that there are still 2.8 million children living in poverty, and one in five families with a disabled child has had to cut back on food. The report concludes that the Government must 'accelerate its efforts' if its child poverty targets are to be met and calls for a long-term strategy on income for those who are unable to work.
