Back to drawing board for unbuilt centre

A school in Bristol has kept its children's centre plans on track after contractors said it would cost nearly twice its allocated budget.

Bristol City Council stepped in to help Lockleaze Primary School after the contractors, Skanska, priced the children's centre at £1.1m, almost twice the £577,000 budget. Through working with Skanska, the head teacher and governors, the council's children's centre team arrived at a new design and re-costed the project. Head teacher Gareth Simons said the alternative plan would still provide all the essential services, including new daycare provision for under-threes, and in a quicker time-frame.
