pay levels: Unison set to demand better deal in next pay round after low rise

Public sector workers' union Unison has said many of its members will be left struggling to meet living costs, following a below-inflation pay rise for the fourth year running.
Local authority-employed nursery workers and school support staff are among 1.4 million local government employees who were awarded a 2.475 per cent rise, backdated to 1 April 2007, and a minimum £6 per hour. The level of award varies from the standard amount for some wage levels and areas. Unison leaders decided last week against taking industrial action.
