Closure plans put on ice

Plans to close down 22 schools and nurseries in Edinburgh have been put on hold, after community protests and a split among leading councillors.

Scottish National Party members on Edinburgh City Council pulled out of a coalition on the schools closure programme with the majority Liberal Democrats on 3 September. Consultations on closing down two of the nursery schools affected were due to begin that day. In all, six early years settings and one third of full-time nursery places were under threat (News, 6 September). The council has confirmed that the current consultation process will be formally terminated at the next full council meeting later this month....
