Here on Nursery World, we certainly don't hold with the view that £21 billion of Government money has been wasted on early years education and childcare, though to read many of the national newspapers over the past week, you might be forgiven for thinking that was the case (see News, page 4).

Many Government initiatives have not been in place long enough for such sweeping judgements - only about a third of the planned children's centres have even opened their doors, for example. Governments must be accountable for big spending, but progress should not be jeopardised by premature conclusions. Ironically,...
