Internet ads target children

Social networking sites and online marketing are being used by major food and toy brands to target children, campaigners have warned.

The sweets brand Skittles collected over 3,000 friends since registering a profile on social networking site Bebo in early July. Last week the Walt Disney company acquired the social networking site Penguin Club, which formerly carried no advertising, but is now expected to be used to promote Disney products. Junk food advertising was banned from children's television earlier this year, but internet promotion is largely unregulated.
