PAT wants later school entry

Too much formal education too soon and playtime reduced for the sake of academic achievement, particularly in the early years, were charges levelled at the Government at last week's conference of the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT).

Debe Lawson, immediate past chair of PAT, put a successful motion at the PAT gathering in Harrogate which insisted that early learning opportunities should prepare children for life, not just for school. She was later quoted in the press as supporting a reduction in the starting age for school to six or seven, in line with successful practice in Scandinavian countries.
