Support staff: New standards but low pay

New professional standards for classroom assistants have been set out alongside revised standards for Higher Level Teaching Assistants.

However, new figures also revealed this week show some teaching assistants are being paid as little as £5.05 an hour. A survey carried out for the Department for Children, Schools and Families by the Institute of Education found that 42 per cent of all support staff earn less than £7.50 an hour, with huge variations. Unison, the largest union for school support staff, called for a national pay and conditions framework to end disparities.
