Special needs: Thomas is an aid to autism

Thomas the Tank Engine, the hero of children's books and television, could play a significant role in the learning and development of children with autism.
In an online survey by the National Autistic Society (NAS) of 748 parents of children with autism under ten, Thomas was named the children's favourite character. Bob the Builder came second. Nearly a third of the parents said they felt that Thomas and his train friends helped their child recognise facial expressions and emotions.
