As many as 40 per cent of parents with young children cannot recite a single nursery rhyme, preferring instead to sing pop songs or television theme tunes to their child, according to a survey reported in The Times.

Janine Spencer, a developmental psychologist at Brunel University, said traditional nursery rhymes can 'help the development of communication, memory, language and reading skills'. Parents spend an average of £2,628 decorating a baby's room, reported ITV News.
