I was interested to read the article 'Sound and fury' (14 June) on systematic phonics and am bemused as to how such appalling practice has become enshrined in law.
Instead of building on what children already know and can do (such an important Foundation Stage principle), are we now to treat children as empty vessels with a daily top-up of phonics, regardless of their age and stage of development? How have phonics come to assume such importance when English is not a phonetically reliable language?
