Baby boom

Britain is experiencing its first baby boom of the 21st century, with 1.87 babies born per woman in 2006, the highest number since 1980, according to the Office for National Statistics.

It is believed that older mothers and migrant families are behind the boom, making up for younger British-born women choosing to have fewer children.
