By James Tweed,

* Just under six adults in ten in England and Wales would support changes in the law regarding smacking if they were sure parents would not be prosecuted for 'trivial smacks', a survey for the NSPCC has found. Almost all the respondents (97 per cent) said parents should not be allowed to punish children aged up to 18 months, and just over three-quarters (78 per cent) said the same should apply to under-threes. But 96 and 98 per cent respectively said parents should not be allowed either to use implements to punish children or to hit them on the head.
