The transfer of childcare inspections in England to Ofsted's Early Years Directorate is top of many providers' minds at the moment, and this week Nursery World features a lengthy interview with EYD director Maggie Smith about the task facing the new organisation (see pages 12-13). Ms Smith talks impressively about the systems that have been put in place and the approach taken by the EYD, but there is no doubt that problems and frustrations were inevitable at the start. Already, providers are complaining about delays with police checks in particular.
