Colour blind

Nursery World, 12 December 2002

I was interested to see the photograph of nursery children making African masks at the Museum of Childhood (News, 31 October). The children were clearly using white card as the basis for the masks. As research on racism shows that some children think that if you scrub black skin it will be white underneath, I have always thought that using white card as the starting point for any face- or mask-making with young children was misguided. Does anyone else have a viewpoint on this?
